Under the patronage of His Excellency President Ahmad Al-Sharaa, Syria has officially launched a major redevelopment initiative at Damascus International Airport (OSDI/DAM), marking a transformative moment for the nation's aviation sector. A consortium of five global companies, led by Qatar’s UCC Holding, has signed a memorandum of understanding with the Syrian government to invest over US$4 billion in upgrading and expanding the airport’s facilities.
This strategic project—one of the largest infrastructure investments in Syria in decades—is designed to elevate Damascus International Airport to world-class standards, with the goal of restoring Syria’s pivotal role in regional air connectivity and global aviation. The initiative aligns with broader efforts to rebuild the country’s infrastructure and stimulate economic growth through trade, tourism, and job creation.
The multi-phase development plan includes:
Increasing airport capacity to 6 million passengers in the first phase,
Scaling up to 16 million in the second,
And ultimately reaching 31 million passengers annually at full capacity.
The upgraded airport will feature 32 modern gates with passenger boarding bridges, advanced air navigation systems, and a cutting-edge duty-free shopping and hospitality zone. Additionally, a 50-kilometer main access road will be developed, alongside financing for up to 10 Airbus A320 aircraft to boost the national carrier's competitiveness.
